COWRIE SHELL NECKLACE | INDONESIA
The Indonesian Cowrie shell necklace is handcrafted tribal shell necklace that originates from Indonesia. The oceanic art is an important part of life for the Toll villagers in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea as the string of shells, also known as "Tabu", are a form of Tolai Shell Currency. Tabu was originally used for purchasing everyday goods, to wedding dowries and celebrations to purchasing land and mortuary ceremonies.
The intricate sculpture is formed from ethically sourced cowrie seashells which are bound together with a natural coloured cotton rope.
The necklace comes free-hanging on a black metal stand. We love to style her on a shelf with layered art, books and other accessories. She also looks fabulous making a solo appearance on a console. The necklace is a combination of cream-coloured shells finished with a natural tan rope.
